World Heritage Site Old Rauma spends 30th anniversary of the anniversary
21.5.2021
Old Rauma, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021. Old Rauma was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1991 as a unique example of a living and well-preserved old Nordic tree city. In the same year, the Suomenlinna Military Architecture Monument was also inscribed on the list. The commemorative year of both sites has been prepared jointly.
- Old Rauma and Suomenlinna are quite similar – both are built, vibrant, in need of constant maintenance and very popular. It has been natural to prepare the celebrations together with the Suomenlinna Management Committee, says Mervi Tammi, Deputy World Heritage Coordinator.
The centenary will be visible in many ways and in different contexts during the year. Throughout the year, 30 stories will be published on the website, telling about the history, life, people and culture of the sites, among other things.
- A logo has been created for the Year, which will be freely available for use in the context of Old Rauma and World Heritage. The logo can be downloaded from the City of Rauma Image Bank,” says Mervi Tammi.
If the corona situation allows, an event will be organised in Tammela in late summer
To the property owners, residents and entrepreneurs of Old Rauma, who play an important role in the preservation and revitalisation of Old Rauma.
In honour of the centenary, the facade of the Old Rauma renovation centre Tammela will be completed with a long-awaited gateway. The renovated Tammela workshop will also open in the summer.
A joint commemorative seminar for the 30-year-old World Heritage sites will be held in Rauma on 1-2 December.
Old Rauma is still the heart of the city, where people live, trade, work, travel and enjoy the historic environment. The 29-hectare site contains more than 600 buildings, most of which are owned by private individuals. The population of Old Rauma is around 800.
- World Heritage status is one of the most famous and sought-after tourism and cultural brands in the world. In addition, the designation of Old Rauma is associated with very strong themes in the world, namely Nordicism, urbanism and wooden construction,” says Henri Raitio, Deputy World Heritage Coordinator.
The City of Rauma also hopes that associations, clubs and companies in Rauma will participate in the anniversary with their own events.
