In recent years, general economic uncertainty has reduced tourism in many places, but in Rauma the trend has been different. In 2024, tourism generated more income for the city than in the previous year and further strengthened the region’s vitality.

The direct financial impact of tourism in Rauma in 2024 was 39.8 million euros, an increase of 0.7 percent compared to 2023. When the overall effects of tourism are taken into account, the figure rises to 55 million euros.

– This is a significant result, since nationwide tourism revenues decreased on average by 4.4 percent, says Tourism Manager Irene Villanen.

Tourism is also an important employer in Rauma. In 2024 it created 204 direct person-years of employment, with a total impact of 244 person-years. Many of these jobs are filled by young people and students, which is particularly important for developing local skills and work readiness.

The number of visitors to Rauma also increased clearly in 2024. A total of 142,000 overnight stays were recorded (+7.3 percent), of which 72 percent were in registered accommodation establishments and 28 percent in options such as AirBnB. Registered overnight stays amounted to 102,000 (+1.5 percent). Foreign visitors accounted for one fifth of all overnight stays, and their number grew strongly (+19 percent).

– Compared to many other places, Rauma has succeeded well in tourism. The results show that local companies are providing services that visitors are willing to pay for. Tourism is a sector whose jobs cannot be outsourced – they are created exactly where the services are needed. It brings money, jobs, and vitality to the region, Villanen explains.

Villanen also reminds of the long-term effects of tourism:

– Holiday experiences and memories can also influence where a person later wants to move or invest. Tourism is therefore an important factor for Rauma’s attractiveness and image.

Rauma’s growing tourism strengthens the entire region’s economy, provides employment opportunities, and increases recognition both in Finland and abroad.
