Sailboat on sea at Rauma Archipelago.

Noora Niemi, skipper of the Rauma Girl Scouts (Rauman Partiotytöt), is familiar with the local archipelago. She highlights the variety of destinations and their close proximity to the city center. In summer, the scouts sail four evenings a week on their training vessel Stilla, including overnight trips. A favorite stop is the island of Kylmäpihlaja, where they climb the lighthouse and enjoy ice cream.

The scouts also use the motorboat My to visit places like the Kuuskajaskari island, and in July, they take longer trips aboard Meripurakka, a sailboat used for training purposes. Niemi also enjoys visiting Nurmes island and plans to camp at its scenic spot, Pihluksensäikkä. Another favorite is Reksaari, which is close to her parents’ cottage.

Niemi is also the secretary of Rauma Sailing Club (RPS), Finland’s oldest Finnish-speaking sailing club. RPS will host the H-boat World Championships in 2029, with around 50 sailboats expected to participate.
