Author Tapio Koivukari – sometimes you need to have morning coffee on the island’s shore

Tapio Koivukari has written seven novels set in the Rauma region, five of which prominently feature the sea and islands. He describes the people of Rauma as ‘paattikansa’ – a boating folk whose identity and worldview have been shaped by the sea, fostering broad-mindedness through exposure to diverse ways of life.
Koivukari has been boating his entire life, from childhood in a plywood dinghy to family boats, and still cherishes moments like waking up on a boat anchored by a skerry, brewing morning coffee amid the calls of seagulls and waterfowl.
He hopes the Rauma islands remain primarily nature destinations and suggests Nurmes island for visitors, with its harbours, good trails, and diverse nature. For those seeking adventure, trail in Pihlus is ideal, while Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island offers a majestic experience and panoramic views. Kuuskajaskari provides a contrasting history as a former military base.
Koivukari’s acclaimed novels vividly portray island life, reflecting both its tranquility and hardships, such as rowing to town to sell fish and the decline of professional fishing after the 1970s. His “archipelago trilogy” has been adapted into plays performed at Rauma Theatre, blending historical fact with fiction.
He invites everyone to bring a book and enjoy the beautiful island scenery firsthand.
